Suburban lawn conversion to pollinator paradise
Can we talk about your lawn? And your neighbor’s, too.
Lawns occupy significant land where native ecosystems once thrived. They are dead zones for pollinators and other species that depend on wild areas. Lawns are the largest irrigated crop by land area in the US, requiring outsized water use and heavy applications of synthetic fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides that can create toxic runoff. Gas-powered mowers and trimmers create planet-warming emissions.
A better idea, which is gaining traction across the US, is wholly or partially converting lawns to native planting areas that include flowers, shrubs, and trees. Maryland law protects homeowners’ right to go native, even in HOAs. You can start with just a small corner of your lawn or go all-in to convert it all. Let us show you how!

Backyard permaculture food forest
When matched to your unique microclimate and managed by strategic pruning, an amazing number of fruit trees and bushes can fit into the average suburban yard, providing a steady stream of fresh food all year long. Following permaculture guidelines and integrating native plants enhances productivity and beauty.

Raised-bed veggie production
Raised beds are perfect for situations where space matters, order is important and native soils don’t allow for intensive vegetable production – and for control freaks, since you get to determine almost everything (except for the weather and pests, that is)!

Shaded Asian-inspired Garden, Chesapeake Style
Integrating a few Asian-themed elements with well-chosen native plants in a shady side garden results in a peaceful – dare we say ‘Zen’? – refuge from the summer sun.

A Mediterranean Garden for the Chesapeake Region
Like the Mediterranean, parts of the Chesapeake Bay region swelter through hot summer days – but unlike the Mediterranean, we also have humidity and summer thunderstorms, plus wetter, colder winters. This newly constructed linear garden will give Mediterranean vibes while producing fruit and nuts through even the sweatiest summers and chilliest winters.

Ducks and chickens for garden support and maintenance – and eggs!
With their built-in down parkas and love of mud, ducks are well-suited to the Chesapeake Region’s damp, chilly winters and can handle our summers as well. Chickens prefer drier environs but are masters of compost production. Both can help keep garden pests in check while providing delicious eggs (and endless entertainment!). But keeping them safe from predators like racoons, foxes and opossums requires a well-built shelter. Let’s explore whether poultry is an appropriate addition to your garden.

Vertical Gardening
Look up! Not a bird, not a plane – it’s FOOD! Vertical growing is perfect for urban and suburban gardens that are short on space, or for larger properties that want to maximize production and minimize pest and disease issues. The options for attractive spaces for viney food plants to climb over while providing shade are vast – trellises, moon gates, arbors, or something bespoke.

Rain Gardens, Ponds and Water Management
Water, water everywhere – or nowhere. Like many areas of the planet, Maryland is increasingly swinging from wet to dry extremes. Managing both deluges and droughts is more important than ever. Let us work with you to spread, store, or redirect rainfall to reduce erosion and keep your garden moist in dry times.
